- In 6th grade Social Studies, we study Ancient civilizations. We start with the early man and continue through the Greek civilization. Ancient Egypt is an area of concentration. We take a field trip to the Egyptian Museum in San Jose and do various projects in class. During our study of the Greek Civilization, we look into the religion and culture of the Greeks and study Greek mythology in depth.
MATH

LANGUAGE ARTS
- The Language Arts Junior High Program encompasses the areas of reading and literature, writing, speaking and listening. Through reading the students become more aware of and appreciate the various global cultures, both past and present. They will become independent readers able to evaluate, study and appreciate the various literary genres. The students will become knowledgeable readers demonstrating comprehension of content, answering questions requiring recall, summarizing main ideas, recognizing cause and effect, and demonstrating an understanding of vocabulary and figures of speech. They will be able to use critical thinking skills in order to identify the author's purpose, make inferences and draw conclusions, differentiate between fact and opinion, be able to compare and contrast, identify plot, character, setting, theme, and point of view, analyze moral values, interpret symbolism, mood and figurative speech. Through oral reading and discussions of literature passages, the students will gain a better understanding of the material content.
LITERATURE
- Students are introduced to various literary genres including myths, fantasy, historical, poems, plays, biographies, essays, short stories and informational articles.
- Reading, writing about, discussing and listening to other's ideas about literature to build enthusiasm for reading.
- Continued building of a strong reading, writing and speaking vocabulary by connecting student’s prior knowledge to new words and concepts and developing word analysis skills.
- Analysis of non-fiction using critical thinking skills to identify bias, misinformation, fact or opinion, point of view.
- Review the parts of a novel with emphasis on characterization and the elements of plot through comparison and contrast and story mapping.
WRITING
- Introducing the Writing Process: Pre-writing, drafting, peer response, editing, rewriting, proof reading, publication, presentation.
